Fly Casting Instruction
I’ve been teaching people to cast a fly for many years but when I started helping out in a structured program for kids I felt it was time to learn a structured system for teaching. I joined the Federation of Fly Fishers and organization whose charter is fly fishing education and began work on becoming a Certified Instructor. This is not done to learn to cast you have to know that before you start. The purpose of the program is to learn to teach and the requirements are very specific. It requires training, a written test and then a battery of casting tests and a part where the roles are reversed and you teach the examiner how to cast while he asks beginner type questions.
This experience provides the knowledge and methods to make the mechanics of casting understandable so the basic requirements can be learned. Once these basics are learned the student is free to develop his or her own technique that works best for them built around the basic cast.
Equipment is available for beginners who would like to try it without spending the money on an outfit first. Tryout equipment is provided free of charge.
Note: Casting instruction is not performed on the water. Fly fishing and fly casting are very separate learning experiences. You cannot fly fish until you can fly cast and all of your attention must be on casting to learn it correctly.
