Fly Fishing Maine
Fly fishing opportunities exist throughout the state. Many waters are restricted to fly fishing and have slot limits created based on extensive studies conducted by the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife. Statistical analyses determined populations and growth rates and these scientific methods were used to establish the rules. The results have been excellent and average sizes have continued to increase in trout and landlocked salmon.
The southern part of the state has plenty of lakes, ponds, rivers and streams to provide ample opportunity for day trips while northern Maine has even more areas loaded with wild trout and salmon for over night and extended trips.
Maine’s streams and rivers have excellent spring and late summer insect hatches while the lakes and ponds provide mid summer hatches that can make the surface boil. Between hatch times nymphing the same runs works very well and streamers to imitate our smelts and shiners are extremely effective.
Most fly fishing in Maine is done with 4 and 5 weight rods and floating lines. Full sink lines are used in lakes and ponds to get down to the fish when the hatch is off. Though some of the heavily fished waters have educated fish that require 6X tippet most can be fished with 5X on dries and 4 or even 3X for nymphs.
We always maintain a good supply of all types of flies for all conditions and the ability to tie flies to meet the requirements of the day if necessary. We also can provide complete outfits for beginners and back-up equipment and supplies in case of equipment failure.
